LESSONS
LIVING GREENER
Clean Greener
If your washing machine has a setting to use less water, choose it! You can usually select it by using the lower setting of the washing amount; and your clothes will get just as clean!
Use less hot water. Cold water uses about a tenth less energy in than when you use hot water!
"The average washing machine uses about 31 gallons of water per load, whereas newer, high-efficiency models use as little as 13 gallons of water per load."
Did you know that dishwashers today are about 95% more energy-efficient than in 1972? Upgrade your dishwasher, it could help save you money, and the planet

Save Electricity
Turn off the lights when you leave rooms. You could also try automatic lights, to help you stay on track. Rember to use natural sunlight too... worried about privacy? Use shades, so you still let in sunlight while still having privacy.

Down the Drain
Old showerheads can use more that 2.5 gallons every minute. Newer models can use 0.5 gallons, or less per minute. "By replacing just one showerhead with a WaterSense-labeled model, the US EPA estimates the average family can save 2,700 gallons of water, the amount of electricity needed to power its home for 11 days, and more than $75 in energy and water costs every year."
With a new showerhead, you could save up to 3,000 gallons (or more) of water per year by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth.
Bathtubs use 40 to 70 gallons when full, take showers instead!

Forests Matter
Switch to e-billing. "In the US, paper products make up the largest percentage of municipal solid waste, and hard copy bills alone generate almost 2 million tons of CO2."
Plant a tree! On average trees can absorb 1 ton of carbon dioxide in an it's life.
"The average US office worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy paper per year." Print on both sides, or if your mailing something, e-mail it instead.
